Franz Schreiber was born into the comfort of a bourgeois life in an affluent district of Berlin and totally unprepared for the chaos that Germany's defeat in the Great War brings the country.
Franz and his mother gradually sink into abject poverty after his late father's investments are wiped out by the madness of hyperinflation.
Living on his wits, he survives these tumultuous times until his struggles and final redemption leads to a tragic end as the doomed Weimar Republic is usurped by the rise of Fascism and Franz has to decide where his loyalties lie. |
